We came here for years now when it first opened it was great. Now it is a pain with there new gate codes, ours would not work half the time then the camp host got snippy about it. They are very strict about early check in and check out will charge you extra for both of early and or late. When there is no one in office you have to call and talk to someone random that says the camp host will call but never did before we left. The over night rates are ridiculously since they charge full hook up rate for not full hooks ups on the top. Will not be supporting there campground and will not be going back!!
Excellent dune access. Dunes aren't as varied or expansive as elsewhere nearby. Decent showers, completely private and 2 bucks gets you like 15 minutes or so? Depending where you are, it can be a long walk to restrooms/showers. Not a particularly scenic campground. Kinda cramped. Flat, dusty gravel parking lot with just a few meters between sites. Water and electric hookups available. Pretty short drive to beach access. Alright, but definitely prefer sand camping.
I'm only giving a 3 star to give the benefit of...
The new system with the gates is a pain in the booty I understand that things take time and adjustments but they need to make it clear for people checking in especially with a group the camp host was nice but to took his frustration out on us about us using the gate system wrong unknowingly.
No clear path for wheelchairs or strollers to get to the showers. The store was closed dang near the whole time, which was frustrating because I walked over there about 5 times in one day just trying to buy from them otherwise it's a nice campground and I hope the gate thing works out for them. Also the owner did come over and talk to us and said they are looking into getting some kind of food going so that would be awesome.
Overall a wonderful weekend as the campground only had a few visitors. The areas were clean, bathrooms were clean. A favorite place to stay while enjoying sand therapy at Coos Bay. Excellent dune access, I'll be staying there again. Thanks for a wonderful weekend.
Staff is difficult to deal with. He seems to hate his job and wants everyone to be miserable along with him. Stayed here two times in two years. I will not be staying here next year. I never got a parking pass when I checked in. Saw that someone else had one. When I asked for a parking pass the next day, the manager was agitated and seemed put out by helping me. I witnessed a couple of times when he was rude to kids about going through the wrong gate. I dont usually write reviews, but I was really put off by the managers attitude that I felt it was important to let people know. Again, I am not staying here again.
Beautiful campground is ruined with the angry camp host. Worst way to start a well-deserved vacation when he’s yelling at you and says that’s “just how he talks”. Looks like a lot of reviews regarding him. Customer service goes a long way and this man should not be working with the public.
The gates locking you in is a little unsettling. We tried 4 of our party’s gate codes to get out and none worked. Seems like overkill to need a code to exit.
We were really excited for this trip as we are very avid riders, and we have yet to stay at this campground. Yet, it did fall short on expectations. When we arrived I was told I had a balance due to them originally charging us for winter rates instead of the summer rates (initial thought was honor your prices that was charge, but not a total deal breaker) I had a phone conversation and said that is fine go ahead and charge me the balance. When we arrived, the male host was not super friend actually just rude and seems disgruntled that so many people were checking in (This was at 2pm ish so when check in time is happening). They found my reservation in the book and it said I owed a balance, I said I got a confirmation that it was paid. He kept telling me Nope we run this the day before, Nope you still owe. I actually got so overwhelmed with him that I just said forget it here is the cash for the balance you can bring me a receipt later. We get into our site, and totally fine we get all arranged and things going, the woman host then comes over to our camp site to "refund" me the cash I had just given them because I in fact had already paid and they had ran those reports prior to that processing. We then tried to get firewood later but that was only available while they are open, again though communication was not there when we checked in about it, and we didn't think about it until it was later. I feel there could be a better practice in place to get firewood after the 6pm mark, and have the hours posted of availability.
We did have two spots, and to our surprise we woke up on day two to someone using our other campsite (our friends didn't make it the first night) I did talk with the person that was camped there and he said "Oh we came in late last night and thinking about leaving today or so" and I made it clear that we had already had that reserved (and it technically was my spot for both days regardless if someone was physically there or not), so did the business make double off of it that day. What would have happened if our other party did in fact just come late at night where would they have ended up?
Also, my underage nephew was coming to stay with us, I understand rules in place as well but his parents were dropping him off and his bike. They wouldn't let them past the gate to be dropped off, he was included in our count of people in our site. They told him it would be $10 to get into the gate to drop him off for the day pass, which he didn't need, he was with us. I just told them to go drop him off up the road at a staging area and we would go pick him up to ride back with us. That just seemed a little off as well.
Organization, demeanor and attitude seem to be an issue, and looks from reviews I am not the only one offering this feedback. Other than our interactions listed here, everything else was wonderful about our experience. We will most definitely share with our riding friends and family as I do not want them to experience any kind of this...ever. Again, we do ride and visit this area very often and ride with alot of different groups, this is just one that didn't land on the positive side of it all.
Hopefully things can change and be improved and we might give it a shot again.
We normally reserve 5 to 10 camp sites and tgis is the second time we we get discriminate by people there and specifically the camp ground management i give them a 0* we will nevr be back, and probably thats what they want from, was nice we will be back at a different location thank you OREGON DUNES
